Communication Breakdown

Communication Breakdown is a short concerto for tap dancer and fixed media. It is comprised of two movements, “Point Break” and “Serene”. The first movement, “Point Break” follows a traditional Sonata form. The rhythms are notated for the tap dancer with key points of the fixed audio written in underneath. It is up to the dancer to choreograph or improvise the piece to follow the indicated rhythms to synchronize with the fixed audio tracks.

This piece was composed during the beginning of the pandemic in April as a creative way to perform a piece with unexpected limited access to equipment, instruments, venues, and performers.

This was one of my favorite pieces to not only write, but also perform and turn into an experimental film. I’m especially grateful that I was able to accomplish so much with just the materials in my apartment during quarantine. My advisor for this project was Dr. Baljinder Sekhon.
